Create a life-changing experience for an aspiring health care professional by allowing a MERIT Scholar to shadow you for 3 hours as you work. This summer, 35 Scholars will shadow Monday through Thursday from June 24 - July 24, 2019 [July 4th off].  Shadowing typically takes place from 9am - 12pm, but we are flexible and can accommodate an earlier start or afternoons (1pm - 4pm).

MERIT will make the process clear and easy. Other than a brief evaluation survey, there is no extra work involved. We take care of all compliance paperwork, HIPAA training, scheduling, and logistics. All we need to know is your availability.

Every time I work with MERIT I'm reminded why I chose this field. The MERIT students' eyes light up with every interaction they have, every procedure they observe. The students are friendly, professional, and enthusiastic---they give me the greatest hope for the future of medicine.

Research Mentors

Become a Research Mentor

Create enthusiasm for science research among aspiring health care professionals. Inspire and motivate MERIT Scholars while working with them on their own summer research projects.

Overview:

Host a MERIT Scholar for 3 hours a day over 5 weeks in the summer as they complete a small-scale research project and poster presentation for the Hopkins C.A.R.E.S. Symposium.

MERIT staff will take care of all compliance paperwork, scheduling, scholar stipends, transportation, and preliminary lab skills training.

MERIT staff will also support mentors in scoping out an appropriate project, managing the scholar intern over the summer, and any additional needs.

Research Mentor Expectations:

  • Scope out a short-term research project (similar to a rotation project) that answers a research question or have scholar perform an experiment as part of a larger research project.

  • Complete a weekly evaluation form.

  • Attend a MERIT information session in early June.

  • Provide scholar with alternate research support during days mentor will be absent or unavailable.

Internship Dates and Structure:

  • June 24 - July 26, 2019 [July 4th off]

  • Monday - Friday (9 am - 12 pm OR 1 pm - 4 pm)

Working with a MERIT scholar reminded me of why I originally decided to pursue a career in the biomedical sciences. Watching the cogwheels turn in my scholar’s head as I explained a tricky concept always gave me the boost I needed to get through a particularly grueling experiment… it was the energy that she brought to lab every day that impacted me the most.
