Summer 2016: Looking Back

In the Art of Medicine Internship (AMI), rising-junior Scholars shadow up to 20 different health care providers in a variety of settings including intensive care, pediatrics, outpatient clinics, surgery, and more. Scholars experience various career paths including medicine, nursing, social work, and pharmacy. These internships provide broad career exposure, allowing Scholars to observe medical procedures and interact with providers and patients in a wide variety of settings.

  • In total, Scholars shadowed in 25 departments with more than 110 health care professionals.

  • Attendance in AMI was over 98%

  • Scholars were “Highly satisfied” with 86% of their internship placements.

MERIT couples the firsthand shadowing experiences of the clinical internships with rigorous summer coursework. Last year, Scholars analyzed common medical issues they were likely to see in their shadowing experience. For example, before starting in cardiology, Scholars analyzed the prevalence, symptoms, and physiology, of heart attacks. This coursework provides Scholars key background knowledge and a foundation for clinical experience. Finally, through a series of hands-on lessons, Scholars learned tangible professional skills and earned their CPR-BLS certification.

In the Science of Medicine (SMI), Rising-senior Scholars conducted independent laboratory research in the Johns Hopkins Schools of Nursing, Medicine, and Public Health.

  • Scholars conducted hands-on, wet-lab research to analyze a variety of research topics including prostate cancer, HIV, and diabetes.

  • Scholars worked in 12 research departments around the city

  • Attendance in AMI was over 90%

  • 3 Scholars were awarded scholarships for research, one of which is also a finalist for the prestigious Questbridge Scholarship.
